CLAT vs IPMAT: Difficulty, Better Career, Salary, Scope

clat vs ipmat

CLAT vs IPMAT is a common confusion because law and management are two of the fastest-growing career segments after Class 12. CLAT is for students who want to study law and build careers in corporate law, litigation, judiciary, policy, or governance. IPMAT is for students who want direct entry to IIMs after Class 12 for business, management, consulting, finance, startups, or leadership roles.

Both offer excellent career scope. IPMAT can feel tougher for students weak in maths, while CLAT feels tougher for students weak in reading and current affairs. The better choice depends on your interest and long-term career goal.

What is CLAT?

CLAT stands for Common Law Admission Test. It is a national-level entrance exam conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities for admission to 5-year integrated law courses after Class 12. This program is designed for students who want to enter management education early and build careers in business, consulting, finance, marketing, analytics, entrepreneurship, product, or leadership.

Not all IIMs offer the IPM program yet. As per current listings, the IIMs offering IPM include IIM Indore, IIM Rohtak, IIM Ranchi, IIM Jammu, IIM Bodh Gaya, IIM Amritsar, and IIM Shillong. Among these, IIM Indore, IIM Rohtak, IIM Bodh Gaya, and IIM Jammu are among the most searched options for students after Class 12.

CLAT vs IPMAT: Syllabus

The syllabus of CLAT and IPMAT is quite similar in some areas, which is why many students compare both exams after Class 12. CLAT has an English Language section, while IPMAT has VARC or Verbal Ability, and both test reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and sentence understanding.

CLAT has Logical Reasoning, and IPMAT also includes reasoning-based questions, especially in IPMAT Rohtak and other management entrance patterns. CLAT has Quantitative Techniques, while IPMAT has Quantitative Ability; both cover maths and data-based problem-solving, though IPMAT usually asks a higher level of quant.

The major difference is that Current Affairs and Legal Reasoning are part of CLAT, while IPMAT does not test these sections.

CLAT vs IPMAT: Which is Tough?

CLAT is tougher than IPMAT for many students because it has more diverse sections, including Legal Reasoning and Current Affairs, which are not part of IPMAT. CLAT needs strong reading ability, GK revision, legal aptitude, logic, and basic quant together. IPMAT is not easy either because its Quantitative Ability section can be challenging, and the Personal Interview round adds another layer of selection.

So, CLAT is tougher in syllabus variety, while IPMAT is tougher for students weak in maths and interviews.

Another practical advantage is the exam timeline. CLAT is usually conducted in December, while IPMAT is usually conducted in May, a few months after CLAT. This gives you enough time to first appear for CLAT and then shift your focus strongly toward IPMAT. After CLAT, you can use the remaining months to strengthen Quantitative Ability, revise Verbal Ability, practise IPMAT mocks, and prepare for the Personal Interview round.

However, you should plan smartly. During the common preparation phase, focus on reading, vocabulary, reasoning, and basic maths. For CLAT, add Legal Reasoning and Current Affairs. For IPMAT, add higher-level Quantitative Ability and interview preparation. With a structured plan, it is possible to appear for both and crack both.
